She got out of bed. His phone rang. He looked at the screen. Marie’s name was on the screen. He was hesitant to answer. “Hello, honey.”
“I need you to get to the hospital,” Marie said. He tried to ask why. “She’s dying. I have to go.”
He jumped out of bed and dressed while calling out to Cara. Cara was quiet. He ran to the bathroom. Cara opened the door.
“I have to go,” he said. “My brother-in-law has been sick. Marie just called and said he’s dying. I’ll call you later.” They kissed. He rushed out of the motel room and looked back. She waved at him from the doorway. He waved and left.
